Any food that contains protein can trigger allergy. Many protein-containing foods (e.g. nutmeg) cause problems only in rare individuals. Some may increase in prevalence, particularly if they become more widely eaten.
The case of kiwi fruit is a good example. Kiwi began to be imported into the UK around 1970. During the coming years, allergic reactions – mostly mild – were seen among adults. Then from the 1990s onwards, an increase in kiwi fruit allergy among children was noticed. Many of these cases are severe. It is clear that the introduction of a new food had unforeseen consequences.
Allergy clinics see a wide range of foods causing problems, including pine nuts, coconut, legumes, tomato, poppy seeds and sunflower seeds. A condition known as oral allergy syndrome is becoming fairly common – in which reactions to fresh fruit and vegetables are linked to tree and grass pollen allergy. Symptoms are mild in most cases, involving a tingling or itching sensation in the mouth or throat.
In the future, food allergens may be added to the EU list of those that must be labelled by law. This will be subject to scientific review and based, at least in part, on the prevalence of individual food allergies in Europe.
